Part I (Brief history, classic characters, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars)
The Walt Disney Company was founded in 1923 at a small office located in Los Angeles. During their start-up, Walt Disney and his brother Roy produced a series of short animated films labelled as The Alice Comedies. Their staff grew within just a few months so they had to move to a larger facility. In 1925, the Disney brothers began the construction of a new studio. Many developments would occur over the next 14 years, which included the introduction of Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck, Pluto, and the rest of the classic Disney gang.
In 1937, Disney released its first full-length animated film, Snow White. Walt Disney used the profits from Snow White to increase the size of his studio. He invested on a large piece of land in Burbank and began making movies there. Many classic Disney films were created in that place during the 1940s and 50s – among them were Cinderella, Bambi, Fantasia, Peter Pan, and Alice in Wonderland.
How did Disney get so big?
Today, Disney is one of the most influential companies in the entertainment industry. It was Walt Disney’s vision that laid the groundwork for his company to expand into the giant it is now. One of his hidden talents was convincing other people to buy into this vision.
It was the creation of Mickey Mouse that marked the beginning of Disney as we know it. Walt Disney had to assemble a fresh team to work on this new character. The first 2 flicks on Mickey Mouse were unsuccessful, but the third one, entitled “Steamboat Willie” became a huge hit. It also happened to be the best early attempt at a film that synchronised animation and sound. The succeeding decades would see Disney create the first cartoons in colour as well as “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” the first full-length animated film.
However, the costs of producing these films were so high that the company still struggled. The Disney brothers set up Buena Vista, their own distribution company, and began making nature documentaries that brought in a higher profit margin. Walt also started envisioning Disneyland but couldn’t afford it at the time. It wasn’t until 1955 that he finally made it happen. The amusement park was a huge success, helping Disney’s gross income skyrocket.
Disney pushed the boundaries, not only in animation, but also on how business was done. Through continuous innovation and growth including additional theme parks, merchandise, cruise ships, and more, Disney became a well-oiled machine that kept on moving forward even after the deaths of the brothers. Walt Disney is famously known to have said…
A look into his life and his company is a perfect demonstration of his belief in this philosophy.
Who were the original Disney characters?
There were many Disney characters back then, but they haven’t all been around from the outset. In fact, you may not even recognise some of the names of the first characters, beginning all the way back to the 1920s. Even before Mickey Mouse, there was Alice of the silent cartoons known as “The Alice Comedies” as well as Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, who also starred in silent cartoons.
In 1928, people got to know Mickey and Minnie Mouse in the black-and-white flick “Steamboat Willie.” Over the next 20 years, Disney introduced characters such as Pluto, Goofy, Donald Duck, Chip ‘n’ Dale, Snow White, Pinocchio, Dumbo, and many more. The 1950s brought us Cinderella, Peter Pan, and Aurora (Sleeping Beauty). During the next decade, “101 Dalmatians” and “The Jungle Book” were shown in theatres. It wasn’t until the late 1980s and onward that some of the most famous modern characters were created including Ariel, Simba, Aladdin, Mulan, Lilo and Stitch, Nemo, and Wall-E, to name a few.
What were Mickey and Minnie’s original names?
Originally, Mickey was known as Mortimer Mouse, but Walt Disney’s wife, Lillian, convinced him to change the name to Mickey.
As for Minnie, she has a secret related to her name too – her real name is Minerva and Minnie is just her nickname. In fact, almost everyone in Minnie’s family has a name that starts with M – her grandparents are Matilda and Marshal, her father is Marcus, and her uncle is Milton.
Did Mickey and Minnie ever get married?
Although most people won’t recall ever seeing Mickey and Minnie tie the knot, Walt Disney himself said in 1933 that they were indeed a married couple. Here’s an interesting side note: the original actor and actress who voiced their roles were married in real life too.
How did Donald Duck’s name originate?
It is believed that name Donald Duck may have been inspired by the legendary Australian cricket player, Donald Bradman. In 1932, Bradman and the Australian cricket team were travelling across North America for a Canadian good will tour. He made news when he got dismissed for registering a “duck” against the New York West Indians. At that same time, Walt Disney was in the process of creating a friend for Mickey Mouse. Donald Bradman was the current headline and Walt probably read about him, so he thought it was a nice name for his new character whom we now know as Donald Duck.
Why is Donald Duck’s character so grumpy?
At that time, Mickey Mouse has already made a mark on parents and children for being a “good role model.” Disney wanted to create a character with some negative yet funny traits, but they could no longer bestow them on Mickey. So Disney came up with Donald Duck with his short-temper and clumsy antics.
Was Daisy Duck’s name always Daisy?
Some film historians say Daisy Duck was initially introduced as Donna Duck in the 1937 animated short film “Don Donald” with Donald Duck. However, there are no definite resources from Disney saying Donna was the first Daisy or they were different characters entirely.
What is Goofy’s original name?
Goofy wasn’t always known as Goofy. This lovable pup used to be called Dippy Dawg. He has also gone by the name George Geef (or G.G. for short) in his 1950s cartoon series. Goofy was initially voiced by Pinto Colvig and made his first on-screen appearance in 1932. The first cartoon he starred in was called Goofy and Wilbur and he also had a well-known “how-to” series entitled Goofy’s Glider. He has made appearances in five full-length presentations over the years.
What’s the reason behind Pluto’s name?
Mickey’s dog was not originally named as Pluto. In fact, he first appeared as Minnie’s dog named Rover in the 1939 animated film “The Chain Gang.” By his third appearance in The Moose Hunt (1931), he becomes Mickey’s pet dog with the name Pluto.
There are 2 accounts on why the name was changed:
- One Disney animator by the name of Benjamin Sharpsteen supposed that, “…the name Rover was too common, so we had to look for something else… so …We changed it to Pluto the Pup.”
- It was several months after the ninth planet (as it was known at that time) was discovered. Pluto was named after that “planet” and not the other way around. Some Disney animators believed that Walt Disney chose the name to bank on the sensation of the newly discovered astral body.
How many Disney characters are there?
It depends on what you consider to be a Disney character. There are hundreds of characters created by Disney, but now that Disney owns Lucasfilm, Marvel, and Pixar, that number has increased to thousands.
However, even if you exclude those newcomers, the list of Disney characters is still long and impressive and includes names such as Huey, Dewey, Louie, Bambi, Peter Pan, Alice, Snow White, Prince Charming, Cinderella, Pinocchio, Pocahontas, Merida, Rapunzel, Mowgli, Cruella de Vil, Winnie the Pooh, and many more.
How many Disney movies are there?
There are hundreds of Disney movies. Again, counting them is tricky because of Disney’s partnerships with Marvel, Pixar, and Lucasfilm; and because there are so many movies, related productions, and upcoming films in the mix. The first Disney animated film was Snow White, released in 1937. Pinocchio followed in 1940 and then, later the same year, Fantasia. Dumbo and Bambi were released in 1941 and 1942 respectively.
What are the best Disney movies?
When Disney makes a movie, it’s most likely a good one. Determining the best Disney films is hard because the question at hand is so subjective. Viewers, critics, and even Disney fans themselves have their own taste and criteria for ranking. You may check IMDB’s Top 20 Disney Movies of All Time, based on user reviews and ratings. Note, however, these rankings change from time to time.
Alternatively, we can look at the highest-grossing Disney films to determine the most popular. At the time this article is being written, The Lion King (live action version) is the top grossing Disney film, with a whopping $1.3 billion in gross revenue followed by Frozen with $1.2 billion. The Incredibles 2, Minions, and Toy Story 3 come in 3rd, 4th, and 5th place respectively.
See the updated list of highest-grossing animated films.

**UPDATE** On 21 August 2019 (Brisbane timezone), Marvel Studios announced that they will not produce any Spider-Man films in the near future because of the incapacity of Sony Pictures and Disney to agree on new terms on how to move forward with the franchise. It was revealed that a dispute had already been taking place for the last few months regarding the future of Spider-Man, which resulted to Sony ditching Disney. We hope the 2 studios would re-negotiate soon, as we don't want to see the fans disappointed.

Why did Disney buy Pixar?
Pixar and Disney have always shared a close relationship. It makes sense, then, that if anyone was going to acquire Pixar, it should be Disney. The deal represents a win-win situation: Disney now owns the world’s most innovative computer animation studio while Pixar benefits from the first-class distribution network and financial safety net that Disney offers.
The deal took years and multiple negotiations, ultimately going through in 2006 when Disney acquired Pixar for a staggering $7.4 billion.
When did Disney buy Star Wars and for how much?
Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 for a total of $4 billion. This purchase gave Disney full ownership of the Star Wars franchise. This move has paid off big time for Disney, when they made new Star Wars films – all were blockbusters – and they plan to do more. Disney is already earning significantly more than they paid for Lucasfilm.

If you saw Toy Story 3, you know that the overall message was about learning to say goodbye. Andy had to leave his toys behind as he headed off to college – but Woody, Buzz, and the gang soon found themselves stuck at a daycare centre run by a hostile teddy bear. When Andy did reunite with his toys, he passed them along to their new owner, Bonnie. Even though the toys have a new home now, it’s always possible Andy could make a cameo. We don’t want to spoil the story for those who haven’t watched Toy Story 4, so we suggest you get a copy of the digital release.

How many Incredibles movies are there?
There are currently two Incredibles films: The Incredibles and Incredibles 2. The Incredibles hit theatres in 2004; it wasn’t until 14 years later in 2018 that Incredibles 2 was released. As to whether there would be an Incredibles 3 and whether it might take another 14 years is hard to say. Brad Bird, the writer and director, has not ruled it out – but he hasn’t committed either. Only time will tell!
Why do the Incredibles have powers?
The Incredibles are quite an unusual family. Each member has his or her unique powers and abilities. Brad Bird has shared that he gave each member of the Parr family a specific power based on the stereotypes faced by each one and how they could use their power to accomplish what they needed to and become who they should be. For example, men are traditionally expected to be strong, so Bob got super strength. Mothers tend to be pulled in a million different directions, so his wife is elastic. Violet has invisibility and force fields because teenagers are known to be defensive and insecure. Their powers match their personalities, and combined, they are a force to be reckoned with in any situation.
What is The Lion King about?
In Lion King, a pride of lions rule over the animal kingdom in East Africa. Mufasa teaches his young son Simba about the Pride Lands, the responsibilities of leadership, and the circle of life. Scar creates a trap for Simba and Mufasa that results in Mufasa’s death. He then convinces Simba that Mufasa’s death was Simba’s fault and that he should flee from the kingdom. Simba heeds his uncle’s sinister advice, and Scar tells the pride that Simba was killed along with Mufasa. After meeting some interesting and insightful friends while growing up, Simba realises that he must return home and take his rightful place as king.

How did Winnie the Pooh come about?
The creator of Winnie the Pooh, A.A. Milne, named the beloved character after a teddy bear that belonged to his son, Christopher Robin. The boy’s other toys were also included in the story – Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger, Kanga, and Roo. The original Winnie the Pooh bear is now on display at the public library in New York City.
Where does Winnie the Pooh live?
Winnie the Pooh and his friends live in the Hundred-Acre Wood; it’s the part of the land where most of the stories are set. In the books, Milne uses the term “Hundred-Acre Wood” to refer to a specific section of a larger forest. In the films, however, the term is used for the entire Winnie the Pooh world.
Why can’t Winnie the Pooh spell?
For a bear who has never been to school, Winnie’s spelling isn’t that bad. He spells “honey” as “hunny,” demonstrating that he at least knows the letters and their sounds. It could be that Christopher Robin attempted to teach Winnie how to spell but wasn’t a perfect speller himself. At any rate, Pooh Bear is lovable enough that it doesn’t matter – his misspellings are merely an adorable part of his quirky character.
Is there a real “Winnie the Pooh” forest?
Would you like to visit the Hundred-Acre Wood and see for yourself the magical place where the stories were set? Actually, you can! The inspiration for the Hundred-Acre Wood was most likely Ashdown Forest in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty of East Sussex. In fact, in Christopher Robin’s autobiography (we mean the real Christopher Robin), he mentioned that this forest is identical to Pooh’s. A.A. Milne and his family had a country home just north of that place where they would spend weekends and, during the summer, more prolonged periods.
When did The Jungle Book come out?
The Jungle Book was released as an animated movie in 1967. This classic film tells the story of Mowgli, a child who was abandoned and taken in by a pack of wolves. In the movie which is based on the book by Rudyard Kipling, Mowgli’s peaceful existence is threatened by Shere Khan, the man-eating tiger. Mowgli must leave his wolf family and return to the “man village” to avoid certain death. However, he is assisted on his journey by the panther Bagheera, and later by the carefree and lovable bear Balloo.
In 2016, the live-action version of The Jungle Book was shown in theatres. The film was a “sleeper hit” and was a big financial success for Disney Studios. It even got the record for the largest movie remake of all time until another live-action Disney flick, Beauty and the Beast, grabbed the title the following year.

They typically have a handsome love interest and plenty of dramatic internal conflict. They each sport a signature outfit and flawless makeup. They also have an important purpose, whether it’s saving the kingdom, standing up for the little folks, or just discovering themselves and learning to follow their dreams.
Why do Disney princesses wear gloves?
One of the things the Internet has noticed is that only some Disney princesses wear opera gloves while others do not. The ones who wear gloves do have an interesting situation in common – they are married into royalty rather than being born into it. It’s unclear whether that is the actual reason, but it has undoubtedly become a popular theory that has gotten many Disney fans scratching their heads.
What do Disney princesses teach us?
Disney films may seem like fun entertainment – and they are! However, there’s much to learn from your average Disney princesses. These young ladies are courageous and kind-hearted and, for the most part, set a fantastic example for young viewers of the movies. Disney princesses face their fears, look out for the little folks, and make the most of every moment. They understand that they have to work to make their dreams come true – not just sit around and wait. They forge strong bonds with their friends and families, and always listen to their hearts. These are great lessons for children – and adults – to learn.

However, fans think the movie was made with good intentions even though many others say that the film should not have been made at all. At any rate, it was a huge success, raking in $346 million worldwide.

Along the way, she encounters many dangerous scenarios that test her courage, wit, and determination.
Why did Moana leave her island?
Moana must leave the island to return the Heart of Te Fiti and save her people from the menacing threat of volcanic eruptions. However, some fans have wondered why this was necessary. The gem did not have to be lost in the first place until Maui, the shape-shifting demigod stole it. The ocean delivers the gem directly to Moana as a child – so why can’t the ocean simply return the heart to Te Fiti herself? It may be that the legend implied that Maui should return the heart – but he had no such plans. The ocean enlisted Moana to help, knowing that she would be curious and inspired enough to fulfil the task. Along the way, she also learned wayfaring, which she used to get her tribe back to the art of sailing the seas.

Initially, he envisioned a tourist attraction close to his Burbank studios but quickly realised that the site was too small. He bought a bigger location in 1953 in Anaheim, and construction began in 1954.
Since its opening, Disneyland has undergone many renovations and expansions. Hundreds of millions of people have visited Disneyland since then, giving it the most substantial cumulative attendance of any amusement park in the world.
