Sometimes, you get to wonder why and how a simple children’s song with a repetitive tune can be so popular it can launch a series of “things” that will haunt and entertain an entire generation – and that includes the grownups. Is it because of its repeating melody (as mentioned) or its basic yet snappy lyrics? Or maybe it’s both!
Pinkfong’s Baby Shark song practically did just that! And even after 4 years since it first became a hit – worldwide – it’s still making waves in social media, children’s parties, dance crazes, et cetera. The song is so popular that the name Baby Shark itself became a line of merchandise delighting kids and parents with its toys, playsets, and educational kits.

Future generations will probably appreciate this song as a nursery rhyme, just like the classics: Jack and Jill, London Bridge, and Humpty Dumpty. Who knows?
We can’t answer all the questions on why the song got stuck in our heads, why it’s so catchy, or how long it will remain a hit. Yet, we thought of listing down some interesting and fun facts about Baby Shark that may entertain you.
Take a peak below!
The Song’s Origin is Virtually Unknown
While Pinkfong can be credited for popularising the song worldwide through its YouTube channel, the composer and lyricist are unknown. Hearsay evidence says that the song has its origins in summer camps and campfires due to the popularity of the movie "Jaws" in the late 1970s.
The Original Lyrics Had a Darker Tone
Come to think of it, most of the classic nursery rhymes we know from our childhood like London Bridge is Falling Down, Mary Mary Quite Contrary, and Jack and Jill have some kind of dark history attached to them. So it won’t be surprising if you find out that the original Baby Shark song has some disturbing lyrics too. Besides, what would you think when a family of sharks (if they could talk) says, “Let’s go hunt!”?
Thank you, Pinkfong, for making the lyrics kid-friendly!
There Were Artists Who Performed Baby Shark Prior to Pinkfong
Because Baby Shark is a public domain song and is believed to be in existence for decades, there were other artists who performed and recorded their own rendition before Pinkfong had its own. Here are a couple of the more famous ones:
1. Kleiner Hai (German for Little Shark) performed by Alexandra Müller a.k.a. Alemuel and published on YouTube in 2007
Alemuel’s version eventually became a dance craze in Germany.
2. Baby Shark by Johnny Only released in 2011
Baby Shark Now Has Its Own YouTube Channel
Although it is under the Pinkfong franchise, Baby Shark has become a brand in itself. To rightly put it, Baby Shark is now a “living” character just like other famous cartoon characters kids are fond of. He has his own YouTube channel where he and his shark family are teaching children a variety of things such as washing hands, arts and crafts, and good manners.
Baby Shark’s Intro Is Similar to the Jaw’s Theme
Talking about Jaws, if you have seen this classic shark movie, you might recognise that the Baby Shark’s intro evokes a similar tune. The Jaw’s soundtrack was composed by the famed musician, John Williams.
The Wiggles Have Their Own Version of Baby Shark
Oh, yes! Our favourite Australian kids’ band, The Wiggles, has recorded a Baby Shark single. Check it out and listen.
